Copywriting tips for professional copywriters

Copywriting is a literary skill honed through lived experiences as much as it is fine-tuned by writing and practise. Firstly, however, you need a curious, creative mind and a good way with words. From there onwards, a lot of things become possible.

Observe and understand

As far as copywriting tips are concerned, the following few are bound to add value to your copywriting outputs:

Take careful stock of your surroundings and the interaction between people. Not only will you find ways of saying things cleverly, more clearly and in a more appealing way, but as a professional copywriter you will also start gaining an understanding of what makes people tick.

Always do audience research

Always do your audience research homework before you even attempt writing any copy. You usually don't have enough time; make time. Who are the people you are writing for? How old are they, what do they earn, where do they live, etc.

The answers to these questions will add to the value of your copywriting outputs and increase your calibre as a professional and freelance copywriter. If you don't conduct proper audience research, you'll be stumbling around in the dark.

Write, rewrite, copywrite

When communicating something, find ten unique ways of communicating the same thing. Take at least five different creative or conceptual angles and develop them. Don't get precious about a headline. And don't be shy to butcher and re-write your own long copy to improve style, tone, flow and register.

Learn to handle criticism

Creative outputs are more a reflection of opinion, crafting and effort than talent - and certainly has no bearing on one's character. Through discussions and criticism you catch a glimmer of what your audience's take-out may be. But don't bank on it, and learn to trust your gut. Once you've made up your mind, don't be afraid to defend your ideas to other copywriters or creatives.

Believe in your own copy

The ultimate creative sin is not believing in your own work. If you don't buy into it, your client almost certainly won't either. And if they do, it will be bad for the brand and your reputation as a copywriter.

Copywriting tips aren't the be-all and end-all, yet the above copywriting tips constitute the very minimum requirements for developing your copywriting technique - and most freelance copywriters will benefit from them.
